Hellmouth and the Damned (Abingdon Apocalypse)

This miniature depicts a grotesque Hellmouth composed of three monstrous, green-skinned heads with wide, staring eyes and bared teeth, snarling toward the center of the frame. Within the maw, human figures—drawn as small, simplified souls—are being crushed and enveloped by the creature's dark orange, fiery interior. To the lower right, a small, winged, hairy devil with a pointed tail and horns stands on the edge of the flames, holding a two-pronged pitchfork and looking toward the center. The background consists of a blue, grid-patterned panel set against vertical, flame-like ribbons of orange and red pigment at the top.

This illumination is part of the tradition of Medieval English apocalyptic art, visualizing the eschatological themes found in the Book of Revelation and popularized by medieval sermon literature regarding the torments of the damned.
