A crowd of men in 15th-century Florentine attire gathers in an enclosed courtyard, their expressions reflecting the outcome of a divine trial. In the lower left foreground, a suitor in a purple robe bends a dry wooden rod to snap it, a symbolic act signifying that his rod did not miraculously flower. The other men wear a variety of colorful tunics and ornate headgear, including turbans and cowls, set against a pink architectural wall with decorative circular medallions.
