The saint stands in the center of a classical church interior, wearing a dalmatic embroidered with golden flames and distributing coins from a pouch. He is surrounded by figures representing the needy, including a mother with an infant and a man with a crutch, all reaching out for charity. The architectural setting uses deep linear perspective with rows of Corinthian columns leading to a domed apse.

This work, commissioned by Pope Nicholas V, represents the synthesis of Early Renaissance humanism and Christian piety. Nicholas V was a pivotal figure in the 'renovatio' of Rome and the founder of the Vatican Library, which became a repository for the Greek and Latin texts foundational to the Western esoteric tradition.
