Original fileAngelico - Madonna con Bambino, san Domenico, san Pietro Martire e gli Evangelisti, 1439 - 1440
The central Virgin Mary supports the Christ Child, who holds an orb symbolizing divine sovereignty over the earthly world. Saint Dominic stands to the left in contemplative prayer, while Saint Peter Martyr kneels on the right, both figures set against a radiant background. The arched border of the painting contains medallions depicting the four Evangelists.
Created during the Council of Florence (1439), this work reflects the Dominican order's influence on the city's intellectual climate just as the arrival of Greek scholars began to stimulate the revival of Neoplatonism. The orb held by the Christ Child represents the totality of the known world under divine logos.
