Martyrdom of St Lawrence

Saint Lawrence lies across a metal grate over hot coals while two men use long poles to hold him in place. A crowd of Roman soldiers and officials watches the execution from ground level and from a classical balcony decorated with five statues in niches. To the left, a small window shows Lawrence in prayer, his halo inscribed with his name.

This work reflects the mid-15th century humanist interest in classical antiquity, specifically the attempt by Pope Nicholas V to reconcile the historical Roman Empire with the triumph of the early Christian martyrs. The architectural setting demonstrates an early Renaissance transition toward the use of perspective and classical orders to ground religious narratives in a historically 'authentic' Roman world.
