Meeting of St Francis and St Dominic

Two friars in monastic habits embrace before a church, representing the Franciscan and Dominican orders joining in a shared mission. In the sky, Christ appears in a golden radiance holding arrows of judgment while the Virgin Mary kneels beside him in a gesture of intercession. The architectural setting uses pale pink stone and simple arches, overlooking a distant valley with a walled city.

This work illustrates the 'Concordia' or harmony between the two main mendicant paths—one of intellect (Dominic) and one of love (Francis)—a duality that became a central theme in the Neoplatonic synthesis of the later Florentine Academy. Fra Angelico’s visual language at San Marco provided the aesthetic and spiritual environment for the Medici circle and Marsilio Ficino.
