The Ascension of Christ (Bamberg Apocalypse)

Christ is centrally positioned in the upper register, wearing a blue robe and ochre mantle, holding a slender cruciform staff and stepping onto a small cloud. He is framed by two angels in the upper corners with blue wings and golden halos. Below, the scene is set on stylized green mounds; two central angels in light blue and white robes point upward toward the ascending Christ. To the left and right, groups of figures, including the Virgin Mary, look upward with varying expressions of reverence and contemplation.

This illumination is part of the Bamberg Apocalypse, a key example of Ottonian manuscript production commissioned for the Holy Roman Emperor, reflecting the theological emphasis on Christ’s dual nature and heavenly authority characteristic of the late 10th or early 11th century.
