About This Work
At the center of a celestial radiance, the Lamb of God stands upon a rainbow arc, his blood flowing into a chalice. Around this central glory appear the four winged creatures of the Tetramorph, while a dense crowd of the redeemed hold palm branches below. In the foreground, St. John the Evangelist kneels to witness the vision, prompted by one of the twenty-four crowned elders.
This work is a seminal piece of Northern Renaissance visionary art, reflecting the millenarian fever and apocalyptic expectations of the late 15th century. It established a standard iconographic vocabulary for Western mystical and hermetic interpretations of Johannine prophecy.
