Original fileAankondiging van de geboorte van Christus aan Jozef Annunciaties uit de bijbel (serietitel)
after Hendrick Goltzius
A weary Saint Joseph sleeps soundly on a bed, his carpenter's tools—a saw, axe, and basket—resting on the floor beside him. Above him, a radiant angel emerges from a massive, swirling bank of clouds, accompanied by several winged cherub heads. A small window in the corner offers a view of a distant building and landscape, emphasizing the bridge between the mundane world and the divine realm.
This work depicts the 'somnium', or prophetic dream, a state highly regarded in both Christian theology and Neoplatonic philosophy as a moment when the soul is receptive to celestial truths. Produced within the circle of the Haarlem Academy, it reflects the Mannerist interest in the dramatic intersection of the physical and supernatural worlds.
