Original fileTwelve men in formal sixteenth-century Dutch attire, featuring ruffs and long cloaks, process somberly toward the right. One central figure carries a ceremonial mace, an emblem of judicial authority, while the group represents various levels of government and civil administration. This is a single plate from a larger frieze documenting the public mourning and funeral rites held in Delft for the assassinated Prince of Orange.
Engraved by Hendrick Goltzius, this work documents the founding of the Dutch Republic, a state that provided the intellectual freedom and printing infrastructure necessary for the flourishing of Western esoteric traditions in the seventeenth century. Goltzius himself was a primary figure in the Haarlem Mannerist circle, known for blending technical virtuosity with complex mythological and philosophical themes.
