Mountain Landscape with Buildings

This engraving depicts a dramatic, imaginative terrain of jagged rock formations and soaring peaks. A small wooden house with a fence occupies the lower center, while a walled city or castle is nestled into the side of a massive cliff in the middle ground. To the right, the landscape opens up to a body of water where two small ships are visible under a sky filled with stylized clouds.

Designed by Hendrick Goltzius, a leading figure of the Haarlem Mannerists, this work reflects the early modern concept of the 'Book of Nature' (Liber Naturae). This philosophical view held that the physical world was a secondary scripture to be read and decoded, making the depiction of the 'macrocosm' in landscape art an exercise in natural philosophy and divine contemplation.
