In the center, Charity is shown as a nursing mother surrounded by children, while Faith kneels before her and Justice stands with a man on the right. The scene is densely packed with scriptural references to divine providence, including the lilies of the field and birds of the air mentioned in the Sermon on the Mount. A small inset at the bottom left depicts the Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes, reinforcing the theme of divine provision.
This work by Goltzius exemplifies the Haarlem Mannerist approach to complex moralizing allegory, where visual symbols and Latin text synthesize Reformation theology with Neoplatonic ideas of divine emanations and virtues. It reflects the intellectual climate of the late 16th-century Low Countries, focusing on the relationship between human labor, faith, and the invisible hand of Providence.
