The engraving features the powerful, twisting physiques and complex spatial arrangements characteristic of late 16th-century Netherlandish art.

This work illustrates the transformative power of divine law over nature as found in Ovid's Metamorphoses, a text fundamental to Renaissance Neoplatonism and the esoteric interpretation of myth. Within the Haarlem school, such images served as meditations on the 'secrets of nature' and the moral order of the cosmos as reflected in classical antiquity.
