A stoic Christ sits at the center of a crowded night scene, illuminated by the harsh, flickering light of a single torch. Soldiers in elaborate turbans and feathered hats use long poles to force a crown of thorns onto his head, while a mocking figure kneels before him. Goltzius was the leading figure of the Haarlem Mannerists, and this work reflects the revival of earlier Northern Renaissance styles as a vehicle for intense spiritual meditation. The focus on the 'Man of Sorrows' connects to the devotional tradition of 'Imitatio Christi,' which encouraged the viewer to achieve spiritual purification through the contemplation of suffering.
