Original fileafter Hendrick Goltzius
Christ sits in a dark architectural space, his head bowed in suffering as he holds the reed and birch rods used in his flagellation. Two kneeling angels flank him, lifting massive flaming torches that illuminate his body and the surrounding stone columns. The foreground contains additional instruments of the Passion, including a bucket and a whip, while Latin verses are inscribed in three ornate panels below.
The engraving reflects the inward-looking spiritualism of the late Dutch Renaissance, asking philosophical questions about the reciprocal relationship between the human soul and the divine. The inscriptions at the bottom echo the mystical theology of the Dutch 'Devotio Moderna' and Christian Neoplatonism, focusing on the individual's union with the suffering of God.

Translation
With the privilege of His Sacred Imperial Majesty. H. Goltzius painted. J. Maetham engraved. ECCE HOMO. What thanks will you, O man, render for such great piety? What price will you pay? If not yourself, of whatever worth you may be. For the splendor of his lineage, and for his probity and learning, to the distinguished and noble Lord, Lord BALDWIN von ROON, Jacob Maetham, out of regard, gladly and deservedly dedicates and presents this. Christ gives Himself to you; give yourself in return to Christ. What is God Himself to you? What are you yourself to God?
Thomas à Kempis
The image and its accompanying verses align with the 'Imitatio Christi' tradition, emphasizing personal meditation on Christ's humanity and suffering.
