Original fileA young boy wearing a starched ruff and a hat is perched on the back of a large, spotted spaniel. He holds a falcon on his gloved hand, gesturing toward it, while a massive tree trunk and a distant landscape with mountains frame the scene. At the bottom, a decorative scroll contains Latin inscriptions and verses explaining the symbolic meaning of the figures.
This portrait is an allegory of 'Ingenium' (natural talent or spirit) and 'Fides' (loyalty/faith), themes central to the Neoplatonic humanist education favored by the Haarlem Mannerists. The interaction between the boy, the dog, and the bird illustrates the cultivation of the youthful soul and the mastery of the senses through virtue.

Translation
With the privilege of His Imperial Majesty. Anno 1597 HG To Christophorus Vredius, his friend, acting as agent among the Venetians, Goltzius dedicated and provided this out of regard for their affinity. What does this tablet signify? A boy, a dog, and a bird, in a few things embracing and cherishing Mind, Talent, and Chastity. As a faithful companion, let the boy embrace those things which the sharp hand of Goltzius has fashioned in bronze, of mind and talent. F. Estius
Franco Estius
The Neo-Latin poet who composed the verses at the bottom of the print, providing the allegorical interpretation of the boy, dog, and bird.
