Original fileThe monarch is depicted from the waist up, wearing a high ruff and a voluminous fur-lined cloak over a doublet embroidered with fleur-de-lis. He rests his hands on a table draped with a patterned cloth, holding a pair of gloves in his right hand while prominently displaying rings on his fingers. A medallion, likely the Order of the Elephant, hangs from a ribbon around his neck.
Frederick II was a pivotal figure in the history of natural philosophy as the patron of the astronomer Tycho Brahe, to whom he granted the island of Hven for the construction of the Uraniborg observatory. His support enabled the precise astronomical observations that would eventually allow Johannes Kepler to formulate the laws of planetary motion.
