Ernout, the son of Dirck 
the Second, had by Lutgaert, the daughter of the

He obtained, with the consent of the Emperor 
Otto the Third, that the County of 
Holland, Zeeland, and Friesland should henceforth 
be held as a fief from the Empire 
and not from the crown of France.

About five years after the death of his 
father, being the year nine hundred and 
ninety-three, he was (fighting against 
the West Frisians as they did not want 
to stand under him) in a miserable defeat 
at Winckel, made in the village, both of captains 
and nobles as well as other common soldiers, 
among the heap on the eighteenth of October, 
slain / and then with unspeakable 
sorrow of his subjects, at Egmont
