A standing figure in profile wears an elaborate plumed helmet and breastplate, holding a tall staff or baton. A shield featuring a rampant lion is slung over his shoulder, and a heavy, fringed mantle hangs from his back. The portrait is set within a book alongside Dutch text detailing the histories of the Counts of Holland.

While a historical portrait, this work was created by Hendrick Goltzius, the leading figure of the Haarlem Mannerists whose circle was deeply immersed in Neoplatonic and Hermetic thought. The series of counts served to establish a lineage of authority during the Dutch Revolt, utilizing the sophisticated engraving techniques that Goltzius later applied to complex alchemical and mythological allegories.
