Original fileThe subject is shown half-length, wearing a fur-lined cloak over a doublet and holding a small open book in his hands. His weathered face and grey beard are rendered with meticulous cross-hatching, and a small coat of arms within a laurel wreath is visible in the upper right. A Latin inscription below the portrait notes that this engraving was based on an earlier painting by Maerten van Heemskerck.
Jan van Zuren was a central figure in the Haarlem humanist circle and a business partner of the philosopher Dirk Volckertsz Coornhert. This portrait reflects the high status of the printing trade and the intellectual culture of the Northern Renaissance, particularly the claim that Haarlem was the birthplace of movable type.
IOHANNES ZVRENVS. Ao. AETAT. 71. Domini, 88. HG. fecit. Ampsing.
Translation
JOHANNES ZVRENVS. Year of age, 71. Of our Lord, 88. HG. made this. The image of the body which Goltzius expressed in copper, Heemskerck previously painted with a learned hand. Then a greater grace resided in the flourishing form: Now many a senile wrinkle ploughs the face. Johannes van Zuren, book printer and mayor at Haarlem, wrote much, but published nothing. Many of his writings tend to rest with his heirs, among which is a very fine Dialogue demonstrating that the art of printing was discovered at Haarlem, and nowhere else. He lived on the corner of the Smedestraat by the market in the old Town Hall, and died 10 May 1591, age 74. Ampsing.
Dirk Volckertsz Coornhert
Van Zuren was a close associate and printing partner of Coornhert, a major Dutch ethical philosopher and proponent of religious tolerance.
Maerten van Heemskerck
The inscription identifies Heemskerck as the artist of the original painting upon which Goltzius based this engraving.
