Lot's Flight from Sodom

Two winged angels lead Lot and his family through a rocky landscape, away from the distant, flaming city of Sodom. Lot's wife is depicted among the group, turning her head back toward the destruction just before she is transformed into a pillar of salt. The engraving features figures with powerful, heavy musculature and complex, swirling robes characteristic of the northern style of the period.

This work is a significant product of the Haarlem Mannerist circle, where biblical scenes were often imbued with moral-philosophical depth regarding the soul's journey. The narrative of Lot's escape was frequently interpreted in Neoplatonic and Stoic circles as an allegory for the righteous man's detachment from a corrupt material world during times of divine judgment.
