Original fileafter Hendrick Goltzius
The Prince is shown in a three-quarter view within an oval border, wearing a starched ruff and holding a commander's baton. Beside him sit a helmet and gauntlet, and his coat of arms is displayed on the left with the motto 'Je Maintiendray.' At the very top of the frame, a small, lifelike fly is engraved as an illusionistic detail.
As the leader of the Dutch Revolt, William established the political climate of religious tolerance and intellectual freedom that transformed the Netherlands into a safe haven for the publication of esoteric, alchemical, and Rosicrucian texts in the 17th century.
