Powerful, muscular giants climb toward the clouds, wielding uprooted trees and clubs as weapons against the heavens. In the upper register, Jupiter descends on his eagle casting three-forked lightning bolts while Athena defends with her spear and aegis shield. In the Renaissance Neoplatonic tradition, the Gigantomachy symbolized the struggle between the base, material impulses of the soul and the higher divine intellect.
