A quartered shield featuring alternating motifs of lozenges and roses, surmounted by a helmet with elaborate foliage-like mantling. A winged gryphon rises from the helmet as a crest, all contained within a simple oval border.

This early engraving by Hendrick Goltzius illustrates the refined heraldic work produced by the Haarlem engraver before his later fame for complex allegorical and philosophical subjects. While heraldry and emblematics share a common visual language, this work primarily serves a social and genealogical function for the Van Heussen family.
