Diagram of the 72 Names of God

This elaborate circular engraving features a radiant sun at its center, within which the Christ child stands atop a cloud, flanked by the letters of the IHS monogram. Radiating outward are concentric rings containing names of the divine in Latin, Greek, and various vernaculars, alongside the 72 traditional Hebrew names of God. The entire solar structure is flanked by two large, branching trees: the one on the left relates to the senses and archangels (Gabriel, Michael, Raphael, Uriel), while the tree on the right lists the twelve tribes of Israel. The composition is highly symmetrical, structured to demonstrate the universal reach of the divine name across all human nations and spiritual hierarchies.

This diagram appears in Kircher's 'Oedipus Aegyptiacus' (1653) and serves as a primary example of Christian Cabala, where Kircher attempts to synthesize Jewish mystical traditions with Christian theology to argue for a 'universal language' of the divine. It reflects the 17th-century Baroque endeavor to categorize all human knowledge and spiritual lineages into a single, cohesive cosmological framework.
