The engraving depicts a path of sound originating at point A, striking a vertical tower (labeled B-C), and reflecting toward point V. The schematic uses straight lines to demonstrate the law of reflection applied to acoustics, set against a simplified landscape of jagged rocks. German text above and below the illustration explains the relationship between the angle of the source and the resulting echo.
Athanasius Kircher was a pivotal figure in the Western esoteric tradition who sought to harmonize natural science with Hermetic philosophy; he viewed acoustics as a key to understanding the 'universal harmony' of the cosmos. This diagram reflects Kircher's 'Phonurgia,' an area of study where he combined mechanical engineering with natural magic to create 'wonder-working' acoustic devices for the Baroque courts.

Von Natur und Eigenschafft deß Schalles. 15 A, B, C, V Weiter / wann die Stimm oder Thon auß A. komt / und der widerhallende Gegen- Stand oder Wand seye BC. ein Thurn eines Berges ; So sag ich / daß die Stimm auß A in B. und von dannen in V schalle. Die Ursach ist eben wie in vorgehenden ; dann weil die Stimm oder Thon schräg oder schlems in B fället / so muß nohtwendig die Stimm gleich winckelicht in V. widerhallen / und das wurde eben auch geschehen / wann die Stimm me auß V. käme / so wurde der Wider-Hall in A. geschehen / wie die Figur außweiset / auß welchem besagt- und erwisenem wir folgende reguln machen.
