Original fileThe engraving depicts a path of sound originating at point A, striking a vertical tower (labeled B-C), and reflecting toward point V. The schematic uses straight lines to demonstrate the law of reflection applied to acoustics, set against a simplified landscape of jagged rocks. German text above and below the illustration explains the relationship between the angle of the source and the resulting echo.
Athanasius Kircher was a pivotal figure in the Western esoteric tradition who sought to harmonize natural science with Hermetic philosophy; he viewed acoustics as a key to understanding the 'universal harmony' of the cosmos. This diagram reflects Kircher's 'Phonurgia,' an area of study where he combined mechanical engineering with natural magic to create 'wonder-working' acoustic devices for the Baroque courts.
Translation
Of the nature and property of sound. 15 A, B, C, V Furthermore / when the voice or tone comes from A / and the echoing object or wall is BC, a tower of a mountain; then I say / that the voice echoes from A to B, and from there to V. The cause is the same as in the preceding; for since the voice or tone falls obliquely or slanting into B / the voice must necessarily echo back at an equal angle into V / and this would happen exactly the same / if the voice were to come from V / then the echo would happen in A / as the figure demonstrates / from which stated and proven [matter] we make the following rules.
Athanasius Kircher, Phonurgia Nova
This diagram is the visual proof for acoustic reflection theories detailed in Kircher's 1673 work on the 'science of sound.'
