The Virgin Mary and Saint Elizabeth reach out to clasp hands in a stylized, rocky landscape before a simple stone building. Mary is accompanied by Saint Joseph and two female attendants on the left, while a servant watches from a doorway on the right. The figures are characterized by elegant, flowing drapery and large, ornate gold-leaf halos typical of the International Gothic style.
As a work by the Camaldolese monk Lorenzo Monaco, this painting reflects the late medieval contemplative and mystical traditions of the Florentine monastic environment. This spiritual climate, which emphasized the interior life and divine illumination, formed the intellectual substrate upon which the later Florentine Neoplatonic revival was built.
