Original fileThis drawing features a central study of a torso wrapped in heavy, folded robes, using fine lines to create depth and shadow. Three separate sketches of hands are scattered around the torso, showing fingers and palms in expressive, open gestures of demonstration or revelation. These sketches served as detailed practice for a large-scale fresco in the Vatican.
These studies were created for the Stanza della Segnatura, the intellectual heart of the Renaissance Vatican. The room's iconographic program reflects the Neoplatonic effort to harmonize human reason and ancient philosophy with Christian theology, a concept known as 'prisca theologia'.
