The composition is split into two realms: a divine upper tier where Christ is flanked by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist, and a lower tier where figures such as the four Doctors of the Church and Dante Alighieri surround an altar holding a monstrance. A vertical axis of gold light connects God the Father, the seated Christ, and the Dove of the Holy Spirit with the physical bread of the sacrament on earth. The figures are arranged in a deep, semicircular space that emphasizes the harmony between the Church Triumphant in heaven and the Church Militant on earth.

As part of the Stanza della Segnatura, this work represents the synthesis of Christian theology with Renaissance Neoplatonism, serving as the spiritual counterpart to the 'School of Athens' located on the opposite wall. It illustrates the humanist ideal of 'divine truth' achieved through revelation and the sacraments, mirroring the 'rational truth' sought by the philosophers across the room.
