Disputation of the Holy Sacrament

The composition is divided into two registers: a heavenly sphere where Christ sits enthroned between the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist under God the Father, and an earthly sphere where theologians and Church fathers debate. At the center of the lower half, a monstrance containing the consecrated Host sits upon an altar, serving as the focal point for the gathered figures. Notable figures include Dante Alighieri, Pope Gregory the Great, and various saints and philosophers arranged in a wide semi-circle.

Located in the Stanza della Segnatura, this work serves as the theological counterpart to 'The School of Athens,' representing the path to truth through Revelation as opposed to Reason. It reflects the Renaissance Neoplatonic project of harmonizing classical philosophy with Christian doctrine, illustrating the intellectual atmosphere of the court of Pope Julius II.
