About This Work
Galatea stands at the center of a swirling oceanic procession, looking over her shoulder as she steers her dolphin-drawn shell. Around her, muscular tritons embrace nymphs and blow into conch shells, while winged cupids hover in the sky aiming arrows at the central figure. The composition is characterized by a sense of spiraling movement and an idealized depiction of the human form.
Commissioned for the Villa Farnesina, this work represents the Neoplatonic synthesis of pagan mythology and spiritual philosophy; Galatea’s composure amidst the chaotic sea-creatures serves as an allegory for the triumph of divine or 'ideal' beauty over base animal passion.
