Original fileThe painting shows a bearded figure of God the Father surrounded by winged cherubim heads and golden rays of light within a circular glory. He holds a golden crown, while the Virgin Mary is shown in profile to the left, also holding a crown against a background of dark, intricate architectural ornamentation. These panels are the surviving remnants of the Baronci Altarpiece, Raphael's first recorded major commission.
This work represents the beginning of Raphael's career as an independent master in the Umbrian tradition. It illustrates the late 15th-century synthesis of devotional piety and the refined, harmonious aesthetics that would eventually culminate in the Neoplatonic ideals of the High Renaissance.
