This pen-and-ink drawing depicts a group of people in various poses of contemplation and active discussion. One figure on the left appears to be pointing toward the ground as if explaining a concept, while others look on with focused attention. It is a preparatory study for the lower-left foreground of Raphael's fresco 'The Disputation of the Holy Sacrament' in the Vatican.

As a study for the 'Disputa,' this work is part of the intellectual project to harmonize human reason with divine revelation, a cornerstone of Renaissance Neoplatonism. It illustrates the 'vita contemplativa' (contemplative life) and the dialectical search for truth that characterized the humanist culture of the Roman court under Pope Julius II.
