La Disputa

The composition depicts a divine hierarchy with God the Father at the summit, Christ in a radiant mandorla below him, and the dove of the Holy Spirit descending toward the earth. Flanking the central figures are saints and patriarchs seated on a semi-circular bank of clouds, while four winged putti hold open the four Gospels. The background is filled with golden rays and a multitude of angelic beings, creating a sense of infinite celestial space.

As part of the Stanza della Segnatura, this work represents 'Revealed Truth' (Theology) in direct dialogue with 'Rational Truth' (Philosophy) across the room. Its geometric and hierarchical structure reflects the Renaissance Neoplatonic attempt to harmonize Christian doctrine with the cosmological order described by Plato and Plotinus.
