At the center of the composition, Plato and Aristotle walk forward while engaged in debate; Plato points to the heavens and Aristotle gestures toward the earth. Surrounding them are various groups of thinkers, including Pythagoras writing in a book and Euclid demonstrating a geometric proof with a compass. The scene is set under massive coffered barrel vaults, flanked by statues of the deities Apollo and Minerva.

This work represents the Renaissance synthesis of classical philosophy and Christian thought, specifically the Neoplatonic effort to reconcile the 'ideal' philosophy of Plato with the 'empirical' philosophy of Aristotle. It visualizes the concept of *prisca theologia*, the idea that a single thread of divine truth connects all great ancient thinkers, a core tenet of the Western esoteric tradition.
