This work reflects the High Renaissance attempt to visualize divine intervention as an ordered, luminous event, consistent with the Neoplatonic view of God as the 'Sun' of the intelligible world. It depicts a theophany, a direct manifestation of the divine that was central to the mystical theology and intellectual programs of the Vatican under Pope Leo X.
