About This Work
The Virgin is depicted in a three-quarter length pose, wearing a traditional red tunic and a deep blue mantle. She gazes downward with a serene, contemplative expression while supporting the Christ Child, who looks toward the viewer. The figures are illuminated by a soft light that creates smooth transitions between light and shadow, emerging from a void-like black background.
Raphael’s work in Florence during this period was deeply influenced by Neoplatonic ideals of divine beauty. The physical perfection and serenity of the figures were intended to serve as a terrestrial reflection of celestial harmony, a concept central to the circles of Marsilio Ficino and the Florentine Academy.
