This two-tiered fresco depicts a celestial vision in the upper register where Christ is enthroned among clouds and angels, flanked by seated saints. The lower register features six standing figures in an architectural setting, surrounding a central niche that contains a sculpted Madonna and Child. The upper portion was painted by Raphael early in his career, while the lower section was completed by his former master, Perugino, over a decade later.

The hierarchical arrangement of the fresco illustrates the Renaissance concept of the 'Great Chain of Being,' a Neoplatonic structure linking the terrestrial realm to the divine. The prominent placement of the Alpha and Omega at the apex signifies the divine as the Monad or the ultimate source and end of all existence, a theme central to both Christian theology and the Neoplatonism of Marsilio Ficino.
