As a portrait of one of the leading masters of the late 15th century and teacher to Raphael, this work documents the lineage of the High Renaissance aesthetic which sought to harmonize natural observation with classical proportions. The intellectual environment of the sitter and artist was deeply influenced by the Florentine Neoplatonic revival and the pursuit of 'humanitas'.
