In the upper portion of the composition, the apostles Peter and Andrew are shown in small boats on the Sea of Galilee, straining to pull in nets overflowing with fish. The foreground features a grouping of classically draped figures, including men in discussion and mothers with their children, who serve as witnesses to the miracle. The drawing is characterized by delicate line work and masterful anatomical studies, typical of the artist's preparatory cartoons.

This work is a study for the Raphael Cartoons, commissioned by Pope Leo X for tapestries in the Sistine Chapel. It represents the High Renaissance synthesis of Christian narrative and classical humanism, where the physical perfection of the figures serves to reflect divine grace.
