Three Male Figures in Choir Robes

This drawing captures three men in ecclesiastical dress, rendered with fluid ink lines and rhythmic cross-hatching to define the volume of their robes. One figure looks upward in profile, another stares forward with hands clasped, and a third is shown in a stooped or kneeling position from behind. These sketches focus on the naturalistic movement and expressions of witnesses to a major historical and religious ceremony.

As a study for the Vatican Stanze, this work represents the High Renaissance effort to harmonize historical narrative with the monumental dignity of the Roman Church. The project was commissioned by Pope Leo X, whose patronage sought to align the Papacy with both the grandeur of the Roman past and the intellectual heights of the period.
