The scene depicts three women carrying jars of ointment toward an ornate, partially opened sarcophagus decorated with golden dolphin motifs. Above the tomb, the feet and red robes of the resurrected Christ are visible as he hovers in the air. In the background, a small sun rises over a hilly landscape, while soldiers at the periphery react with shock.

In the context of Renaissance Neoplatonism, the Resurrection was often interpreted as the ultimate victory of the spirit over material corruption. Raphael's early work reflects the integration of classical aesthetic proportions with Christian mystery, a hallmark of the intellectual climate in late 15th-century Italy.
