The Virgin Mary is shown in profile with her hands raised, gazing toward a golden crown held by the hand of God the Father. Between them, a winged cherub head with multi-colored feathers looks upward. This panel is one of the few surviving fragments of Raphael's first documented commission, which was damaged in an 18th-century earthquake.

This work represents the earliest professional phase of Raphael, whose later career would define the visual language of High Renaissance Neoplatonism and the intellectual culture of the Roman court.
