Four monumental female figures are arranged across the span of an arch, accompanied by hovering angels who present them with scrolls and tablets. The figures exhibit complex, twisting poses and expressive gestures as they contemplate the prophecies of the coming of Christ. The scene is situated within the Chigi Chapel, showing the integration of classical architecture and sacred painting.

The Sibyls were central to the Renaissance concept of 'Prisca Theologia' (Ancient Theology), the belief that God revealed truths to the pagan world which prefigured Christian revelation. This work reflects the intellectual environment of the Roman High Renaissance, where Neoplatonic thinkers sought to harmonize classical antiquity with Christian doctrine.
