The upper portion, painted by Raphael, shows Christ enthroned on clouds with the Holy Spirit and God the Father above, flanked by Benedictine and Camaldolese saints. The lower portion, completed by Perugino years later, features a row of six saints including Scholastica, Jerome, and John the Baptist, who stand beside a sculpted Madonna and Child. This mural illustrates the stylistic transition between Raphael’s High Renaissance clarity and his teacher Perugino’s more traditional, static devotional style.
This work demonstrates the visual application of Neoplatonic hierarchies of light and being to Christian dogma, specifically the Trinity, which was a central concern for thinkers like Marsilio Ficino who sought to reconcile Platonic philosophy with Catholic theology.
