Recto Study of Drapery for a standing Figure (Study for the Disputa)

This drawing focuses on the complex behavior of heavy fabric as it folds and hangs from a standing form. The artist uses variations of brown wash to create a sense of three-dimensional volume and weight, showing how light hits the ridges of the cloth. The figure's body is entirely concealed, leaving only the structural arrangement of the garment visible.

This study was created for the Stanza della Segnatura, a papal chamber designed to illustrate the reconciliation of Christian theology with Neoplatonic and classical philosophy. The finished fresco represents the 'Truth through Revelation,' serving as the intellectual counterpart to the 'School of Athens' located on the opposite wall.
