Sant'Agostino 3 Pilaster links

A powerful, muscular Isaiah is depicted seated on a stone throne, unfurling a scroll with Hebrew text while two putti hold a garland and a Greek inscription above him. Below the fresco, a marble group shows Saint Anne cradling the Virgin Mary, who holds the infant Christ, housed within a classical niche. The entire ensemble is a funerary monument for the humanist Johannes Goritz, featuring an extensive Latin dedication on the base.

This work embodies the High Renaissance synthesis of Hebrew prophecy, Greek scholarship, and Christian theology. It was a focal point for the 'Coryciana,' a literary circle in Rome where poets hung verses on this very pilaster, linking the visual arts with the humanist tradition of the 'Prisca Theologia' or ancient wisdom.
