Original fileThis drawing contains studies for an elderly man leaning over a parapet and a monumental human foot, intended for the 'Disputation of the Holy Sacrament' in the Vatican. To the right of the figures, Raphael has drafted a Petrarchan love sonnet in his own handwriting. The sketches show the artist's quick, searching lines as he works out the anatomy and poses for one of his most significant commissions.
The 'Disputa' fresco represents the harmony between divine revelation and human reason, a central tenet of Renaissance Neoplatonism. This sheet reflects the intellectual environment of the Stanza della Segnatura, where the theologian Egidio da Viterbo likely advised on a program that synthesized Christian doctrine with classical philosophy.

Translation
A sweet thought comes to my memory of that assault, but more heavy is the harm of the parting, for I remained like those dogs who have lost the scent, alone on the trail. Now tongue, untie the knot of speaking to tell of this unusual deception which Love worked on me to my heavy sorrow, but I thank him for it, and praise her for it. It was evening when the setting of one sun had happened, and another rose in its place, more suited to deeds than to words. I remained, conquered by my great fire which torments me, for where the sun shone the desire to speak remains weak.
Egidio da Viterbo
As a key Neoplatonist and advisor to Pope Julius II, he is believed to have designed the theological program for the Stanza della Segnatura.
Francesco Petrarca
The sonnet on the sheet follows the Petrarchan tradition, illustrating the literary and humanistic culture shared by artists in the Roman court.
