A muscular young man is the central focus, twisting his body and looking back while gesturing with his hands. Behind him, Raphael has lightly outlined other figures, including one wearing a monk's habit and cowl. The drawing captures the artist's focus on dynamic movement and the physical weight of drapery for the figures engaged in theological debate.

This work is preparatory for the Stanza della Segnatura, a room that embodies the Renaissance Neoplatonic program of reconciling classical philosophy with Christian theology. The finished fresco depicts the intellectual struggle of the Church Fathers to understand the mystery of the Eucharist, mirroring the 'School of Athens' on the opposite wall as a synthesis of faith and reason.
