Study for the Disputa

This drawing shows a group of ecclesiastical figures, including bishops in mitres and a pope in a tiara, engaged in intense discussion and study. In the foreground, figures kneel on steps leading toward an altar topped with a monstrance, which serves as the focal point of their theological inquiry. The sketch uses fluid lines and light washes to organize the crowd and establish the architectural space of the final fresco.

This work is a preliminary design for the Stanza della Segnatura, a room that embodies the Renaissance synthesis of Neoplatonism and Christian theology. The decorative program, influenced by thinkers like Marsilio Ficino, seeks to reconcile the 'School of Athens' (human reason) with the 'Disputa' (divine revelation) as two paths to a single universal truth.
